Welcome to Sydney Girls High School, a school with a long and proud history, educating young women leaders since 1883. The contemporary school has maintained and enhanced the original charter: that of support and preparation of talented young women in order that they may proceed to university and take their place beside their male counterparts. Today the school is regarded as one of the top schools in both NSW and Australia.
While academic achievement is the foundation stone of the school, students today enjoy a dynamic and rich school environment which develops individuality and strength of character, while fostering a love of learning and enjoyment of the school experience. On offer is an extensive range of co-curricular pursuits, comprising sporting, creative, intellectual, artistic, and leadership experiences. Girls who come to SGHS are encouraged to broaden their horizons through volunteering and working in the wider community, particularly in the contexts of health, education, the environment, and social justice.
Talents of students both past and present are remarkable. Among the current alumni is the NSW Governor, Vice Chancellors of two of Sydney’s universities, a Federal Court judge, members of the federal and state parliaments , well known authors , social researchers, lawyers, educators and medical professionals. The school captain 2011 was given the honour of leading the Australian delegation of the model United Nations to The Hague. While prizes and accolades are many and varied, at the heart of the school is the desire for every student to achieve her personal best.
Teachers, parents and students work in partnership to ensure that the education received by every student at Sydney Girls is of exceptional quality and that the memories of the school years are recalled with pleasure, long after the wearing of the “brown and yellow” has ceased.
